JSON Formatter & Validator

Format, inspect, and validate JSON with a clear, readable view.

Developer Tools

Your JSON is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded to our servers.

Input is only parsed when you choose Format, Minify, or Validate.

Format, minify, and validate JSON directly in your browser. The tool reports parser-provided error locations when available and does not upload your input.

What is a JSON Formatter?

A JSON formatter takes valid JSON and adds consistent indentation and line breaks so nested data is easier to read. JSON is a data format with strict syntax rules; formatting does not repair invalid input.

How to Format JSON

Paste JSON into the input area and choose Format to validate it and display a readable version with two-space indentation. Choose Minify to remove unnecessary whitespace, or Validate to check syntax without changing the input. Copy and Download act on the current output.

JSON Validation

JSON requires double-quoted property names and strings, and it does not allow trailing commas or JavaScript expressions. For example, { name: 'Ada' } is a JavaScript object literal, not valid JSON; { "name": "Ada" } is valid JSON. Error details use the position reported by the browser JSON parser when available.

JSON Formatter & Validator Features

  • Format JSON with two-space indentation
  • Minify valid JSON
  • Validate without changing the input
  • Show parser error details with line and column when available
  • Copy or download output locally

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my JSON uploaded?

No. The formatter runs in your browser. It does not send the JSON input to ToolCoda servers or an external API.

Why is a JavaScript object rejected?

JSON is stricter than JavaScript object syntax. Property names and strings must use double quotes, and trailing commas, comments, and expressions are not allowed.

Does Validate reformat the input?

No. Validate checks whether the input parses as JSON and leaves its text unchanged. Use Format or Minify to create output.

Can this tool verify a JSON schema?

No. It checks JSON syntax only. It does not check whether the data matches an application-specific schema.
