JSON to Zod

Generate a readable Zod schema from a JSON example.

Developer Tools

Your JSON is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded to our servers.

Generate a schema when ready; the JSON is not parsed as you type.

Use a TypeScript identifier such as Root or User.

The schema describes only this sample. Observed properties are required, and an empty array uses z.unknown() because its item type cannot be inferred.

Convert JSON examples into TypeScript Zod schemas in your browser. The generator infers only the types and object shapes present in the sample.

What is Zod?

Zod is a TypeScript-first validation library. A Zod schema describes the shape and types of data an application expects, and can be used by a project to validate values at runtime.

What is JSON to Zod conversion?

This converter reads a valid JSON example and writes TypeScript source that describes its observed values with Zod. The generated source is plain text; the tool does not execute or compile it.

How to Generate a Zod Schema from JSON

Paste a JSON value, choose a root schema name such as User, then select Generate. Review the output, copy it into a project that has Zod installed, or download it as schema.ts.

JSON Types Supported

Strings, numbers, booleans, null, objects, and arrays are represented with their corresponding Zod types. Mixed arrays become unions, and empty arrays use z.unknown() because an example with no items does not show an element type.

Arrays and Nested Objects

Nested objects are emitted as reusable named schemas where useful. Arrays containing objects with different observed shapes use a union, so the generated schema does not incorrectly imply that every item had the same fields.

Limitations of Sample-Based Schema Generation

A sample cannot reveal every valid value or guarantee that an observed property is always present. Generated fields are required and types remain broad: a string that resembles an email stays z.string(), and a number stays z.number(). Review and adapt the result to your application’s actual contract.

JSON to Zod Features

  • Generate a named root schema and inferred TypeScript type
  • Represent nested objects with reusable schemas
  • Handle mixed arrays, differing object shapes, null, and empty arrays
  • Preserve unusual JSON property names safely
  • Copy or download generated TypeScript locally

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my JSON uploaded?

No. Parsing and generation run in your browser. The JSON input is not sent to ToolCoda servers or an external API.

What does the generator do with an empty array?

It generates z.array(z.unknown()) because there are no observed elements from which to infer an item type.

Are generated object properties optional?

No. Properties present in the sample are required. The generator cannot determine whether other real-world examples may omit them.

Does the converter validate or run the generated Zod code?

No. It validates the input as JSON and displays generated source code as text. It never executes or compiles that code.

What do I need to use the generated schema?

The output imports z from zod. Add Zod to your TypeScript project, then copy or download the generated schema and review it against your application’s data contract.
